Too often these days, boys grow up feeling that experience is entertainment, covering their ears with stereo headsets or framing the world with a television screen. But a mountain or lake requires a map, not a programming guide. Winona is the hub of an extensive program of trips to take campers into outlying wilderness areas. Maine is dotted with names such as Mooselookmeguntic, Azicoos, Cupsuptic, and Mattawamkeag - at once historic, majestic, and mysterious. The region will stir the imagination of minds young and old, as well as test their stamina. A camper can discover what it's like to be even more on his own than at the main camp...to design his days with a smaller group in mind, independent of assemblies, bells, and activity schedules. He can rediscover the simple pleasures around him, to the point where even quietness has a compelling sound. During a typical season, mountain climbing trips might go out to Liberty (4,459ft), Flume (5,089ft), or Lafayette (5,249ft). A favorite among the serious climbers of the Senior Unit is the week-long Baxter State Park trip, including the summit of Mt. Katahdin, the highest peak in Maine. Younger campers enjoy day or overnight trips to Evans Notch and the Presidentials.
